History of the Plushcourt Pygmy Goat Herd.
In 2012 my husbands serous ill health forced him to retire from his successful Hay and Straw business. It was decided to get some Pygmy Goats to give him something to keep him occupied. The Herd became a therapy for him. This is a very heartbreaking sale and will be very sad for us all, but time marches on, and my husband has now got early dementia, it is becoming too much for him to look after them himself. I myself running a very busy Dog and Cat business, find it too much to be able to do everything, especially with my mobility issues. It has been decided by the family that we retain just a few older goats which can no longer be bred from and those that are too old for people to consider and wanting to breed from, as Pets and see will their days out here, where they are greatly loved.
In 2016 the BBC filmed the herd for the program The Farmers Country Showdown, which has been aired on many occasions.
Having C.A.E. status, many Pygmy Goats bred at Plushcourt have been Exported starting new herds both at home and abroad. Our Veterinary Surgeon, Mr. Julian Slater from Larkmead Vets, has done all the disbudding and any castration required of the herd from the onset, and he was also the Vet who took us through to get C.A.E. Status, and can vouch for the health of the Herd.
The first Pygmy Goats came from the Rainbow Herd in Norfolk, and we purchased three female kids and one male kid. Namely Rainbow Heidi, Rainbow Thumper, Rainbow Bambi and Rainbow Billikid. Soon after came two Goatlings, bred by the Beechhay Herd, Beechhay Snowdrop and Beechhay Ellie, but purchased from a lady in Scotland and we transported them back to Oxfordshire. Others that followed were Mountcross Honeygift, Rainbow Opal and Rainbow Martha, and bought at 5 years old were Beechhay Lulu and Beechhay Bella. Following the sale of the original Billy Rainbow Bilithekid, new blood was added with Billies, Rainbow Tornado, followed by Rainbow Wisecrack, Beechhay Harlequin and finally Rainbow Bamboozled. In between some of our own kids were retained as Billies namely Plushcourt Lionheart, Plushcourt Enigma and Plushcourt Holysmoke. Beechhay Snowdrop was the first to kid for us and started the ‘S’. Ellie started the ‘E’ line, Heidi the ‘H’ line, Thumper the ‘T’ line etc. Two of the lines were Triplet producing female lines Snowdrop and Thumper, both were very milky females and reared them easily without any supplementation. Their daughters have produced triplets in turn. Whilst we did not exhibit much, each occasion brought excellent results and Champions and Supreme Champions. The last show we entered was our favourite The Royal County of Berkshire County Show, in 2019. Plushcourt Emblem was Champion kid at Newbury in 2014, and successes at that show were prolific with Rainbow Heidi going twice Supreme Champion over the years, and Beechhay Lulu Supreme Champion, many other wins include Champion kids, progeny classes and Pet classes. All the Female Pygmy goats are disbudded and all are SACS C.A.E. Accredited. They are vaccinated, treated for lice, de-wormed regularly. All the Pygmy goats here have been well handled and walk on the lead are corn fed morning and night.
We decided to do it this way to sell the herd, which is not easy for me, but each goat will have a reserve, a Unique Herd to be dispersed.
